SPONSOR A HORSE
Some horses may not be suitable for adoption or may take an extensive amount of rehabilitation before becoming eligible for adoption. Most of the time the issue is soundness. These horses generally become sanctuary residence and may never leave the organization. When you “Sponsor A Horse”, you are helping fill that gap financially to help care for horse as a sanctuary resident. Your donation of any size will get you an emailed update with photos and a story blog of the horse you’re sponsoring.

Ray Ray
2016 Thoroughbred Gelding by City Zip out of a Dynaformer mare
Ray Ray was bred by George Krikorian in KY, sold at the Keeneland Yearling sale in 2017 for $150,000 then entered the Ocala Breeders 2yo in training sale and sold for $400,000. He started his racing career as a 3yo at Santa Anita in 2019. He raced a total of 34 times with 5 wins, 4 seconds, 6 thirds and earnings of $103,497. Ray Ray broke his maiden in July 2020 at Del Mar and raced at tracks within Southern California ending his career as a bottom level claimer at Los Alamitos. Ray Ray was a favorite among many, he had the first stall in the barn, loved by his exercise riders and groom. In February of 2023, one of my good friends called me stating this war horse was now looking for a soft spot off the track. Had some wear and tear, but overall looked like a solid guy. A phone call to the owner, money paid, and a trailer ride arranged, Ray was heading up to the PNW to the ranch of Equine Racers for some R&R, retraining, and intent of rehoming.
After some down time, it became quiet apparent that Ray had various soundness issues going on. His feet were the biggest factor, just pulling off his shoes would cause him pain to where he wanted to lay down, along with a lameness in his left hind that was yet to be diagnosed. It took one good farrier and an entire year for his feet to grow out, walls to thicken, and him to become pain free enough to be comfortable. Onto diagnosing of his left hind took several vet visits and x-rays of hocks, stifles, back, ankles, pasterns. What was discovered was osteoarthritis of his left hind pastern. Hocks and pastern injections, along with bar shoes behind were done to try and give him comfort to his arthritis in hopes of soundness. While it got better, he still has a slight hitch and has a harder time holding a canter on a circle. His personality and spirit have come out more and more the sounder he gets, but his mind wants to do more then his body can handle. I have put lots of trail rides in on him and he has packed around a novice at the walk and trot during the summer.
While Ray is available for adoption to just that right home, I feel he will take some time for the right person to come along. Each horse that stays in the program costs about $5,000 a year just in basic needs such as feed, shoes, dental, routine vet care. Diagnostics and illness are always extra. Your donation will directly go into the needs and care for Ray Ray. Ray has the cutest, funniest, silly guy personality where he loves to play bite face games and loves his daily scratches and apple treats. He lives on a small farm with 4 other horses, one being his retired best buddy, Big. They have bonded and only leave each others side for short trail rides or grooming sessions. If you are local to my ranch, you’re welcome to come out and meet your sponsored horse, Ray.
